A missile attack by Houthi insurgents on a government security training camp in southern Yemen has resulted in at least 53 deaths and 200 injuries.
The incident occurred on Monday in Shabwa province, targeting new military recruits during their training. Local officials indicated that the death toll could increase as rescue operations are ongoing.
Reports indicate that three ballistic missiles were launched by the Houthis at the camp during the recruits’ formation for training, according to a Yemeni security official.
This attack marks one of the deadliest incidents in a conflict that has escalated this year.
Houthis Acknowledge Attack on Military Camp
The Iran backed Houthi movement has acknowledged the attack, with military spokesperson Yahya Saree claiming that the camp was associated with Saudi forces and that Saudi personnel were among the casualties. However, no evidence has been provided for this assertion, and Saudi authorities have not yet issued an official response.
The internationally recognized Yemeni government condemned the attack and the rising aggression from the Houthis. Rashad al Alimi, head of the Presidential Leadership Council, announced plans to enhance security measures in response.
Local authorities in Shabwa have called for the prompt delivery of air defense and early warning systems to the area.
Intensifying Conflict in Yemen
This attack occurs as both sides intensify their efforts to control southern Yemen. Government forces are working to reclaim territories recently taken by the Houthis, including critical areas near the Bab el Mandeb Strait.
The Houthis have escalated attacks on Saudi Arabia, targeting Riyadh and key oil facilities, raising concerns about a broader regional conflict linked to tensions between Iran and its neighbors.
Concerns Over Escalation
Yemen has faced years of brutal conflict, leading to widespread devastation and suffering. Many people live in dire conditions, with millions of children in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. Recent events have heightened worries about the impact of war on civilians and the country’s fragile security.
Monday’s attack has raised new concerns for the safety of military personnel, with authorities warning that the casualty count may continue to rise amid ongoing fighting throughout the nation.
