A 28 year old man has been arrested in Nepal for allegedly conducting cryptocurrency transactions exceeding Rs 2.16 billion through digital platforms, with police investigating potential links to online betting.

The suspect, identified as Sunil Kumar Yadav from Sabaila Municipality 12 in Dhanusha, reportedly engaged in cryptocurrency transactions totaling Rs 2,16,01,20,821 (Rs 2.16 billion).

Investigation into Large Crypto Transactions

The Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office in Teku launched an investigation after receiving tips about significant cryptocurrency transactions and online betting occurring through various electronic platforms and betting apps.

During the preliminary investigation, authorities discovered that Yadav was involved in crypto transactions worth over Rs 2.16 billion, which they believe are connected to online betting activities.

Collaboration with Dhanusha Police

The Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office collaborated with the District Police Office in Dhanusha to arrest Yadav, who is now in police custody. Officials are examining the nature of his crypto transactions and their possible ties to online betting.

Legal Action Against the Suspect

Yadav faces legal action under sections of the National Penal Code 2017. Section 125 addresses gambling and betting offenses, while section 262(A)(1) pertains to the illegal use of intangible money. The Kathmandu District Court has authorized his extended detention for further investigation.

Authorities continue to probe the extent of the alleged activities and whether others were involved.

Understanding the Rs 2.16 Billion

The Rs 2.16 billion reflects the total amount of cryptocurrency transactions identified during the initial investigation. It does not imply that Yadav made this amount in profit, nor did police seize that sum in cash or crypto.

This case brings renewed attention to the issues of illegal cryptocurrency transactions and online betting in Nepal, as officials investigate the financial activities involved. The investigation remains ongoing, and the allegations against Yadav have yet to be proven in court.
