The identities and details of eight prisoners who escaped from Dolpa District Jail by digging a tunnel have been revealed.
Five of these prisoners were convicted of rape, while three were involved in theft.
They escaped from the district jail in Dunai, Dolpa, on Friday night, according to police.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Anil Raj Giri stated, “Of the eight, six were inmates and two were in custody.”
The identities of all eight have been disclosed, and they hail from the districts of Rukum West, Dolpa, Salyan, and Jajarkot.
The five convicted rapists are:
- Ram Bik from Aathbiskot Municipality 10, Rukum West.
- Kaliprasad Rokaya from Tripurasundari Municipality 7, Dolpa.
- Resham Rana from Kumakh Rural Municipality 5, Salyan.
- Yagya Bik from Barekot Rural Municipality 1, Jajarkot.
The three others include:
- Kailash (Kapil Pariyar), a convict from Nalgad Municipality 9, Jajarkot.
- Tilak Bhandari, an inmate awaiting trial from Aathbiskot Municipality 5, Rukum West.
- Aadesh Bhandari, an inmate awaiting trial from Aathbiskot Municipality 3, Rukum West.
The prisoners dug a tunnel measuring approximately 4.63 meters long, which is believed to have started from their cell, passed through an old septic tank, and led to the outdoor play area.
The escape was discovered around 6 am during the morning roll call.
Officials quickly notified local authorities and police after noticing the eight missing individuals.
Chief District Officer Junu Hamal Dhakal and police led by DSP Anil Raj Giri visited the jail to conduct an investigation.
Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage to understand how the escape occurred and if anyone else was involved.
In response to the incident, security personnel have been deployed at various checkpoints and exits throughout Dolpa to locate and rearrest the eight inmates.
This escape has raised concerns about the security measures at Dolpa District Jail, as the inmates managed to dig a tunnel through an old septic tank without being detected.
Authorities are currently investigating the jail’s security and surveillance systems. Further updates will be provided as the investigation continues.
