Journalist Arrests: RSP Seeks Immediate Investigation and Accountability

Rastriya Swatantra Party Secretariat meeting briefing media in Kathmandu on press freedom resolution

The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has urged the government to investigate the arrests of journalists and address the situation appropriately.

RSP Spokesperson Jagadish Kharel stated, “The government must clearly investigate the reasons behind these incidents.”

The party expressed concern over recent events where police questioned and detained journalists, stating that such actions threaten press freedoms.

RSP calls for an inquiry into police actions in newsrooms

During a secretariat meeting, the party discussed reports of police entering media offices.

Kharel emphasized the need to identify who issued the orders and why journalists were targeted. “It’s crucial for the government to uncover those involved,” he said.

The RSP has requested that the investigation be conducted promptly.

RSP supports press freedoms

“We uphold press freedom, freedom of speech, and human rights as fundamental constitutional rights,” Kharel affirmed. “We will not compromise on press freedom.”

He added that the manner in which journalists were questioned and detained is unacceptable, reiterating the need to identify those responsible.

The party is committed to social democracy and protecting an independent press.

Prime Minister’s Office not implicated

The meeting also addressed claims that the Prime Minister’s Office was not involved in the recent incidents, with RSP leaders questioning the police’s entry into newsrooms.

“We need clarity on what occurred and who is responsible,” Kharel stated.

Journalists detained

The situation has raised concerns following reports of police detaining journalists from various media outlets, including Nepal Press, DN Khabar, and Motivate News. Police also attempted to locate another journalist at a national daily’s office.

These actions have drawn criticism from media organizations, journalists, and political figures, who worry that police actions may infringe on the constitutional right to a free press.

RSP demands swift action

The party has called on the government to clarify what happened, identify those involved, and address the situation without delay.

“There should be no postponement in handling this matter,” Kharel insisted.

This development pressures the government to provide an explanation and has sparked discussions about police authority, journalist protection, and the need for proper legal procedures in investigating published news.
