Government Spokesperson addressing journalists regarding the transfer of Nepal Police IGP Dan Bahadur Karki

The government has confirmed that no disciplinary action has been taken against Nepal Police Inspector General Dan Bahadur Karki; instead, his role has been changed.

Education and Sports Minister and Government Spokesperson Sasmit Pokharel shared this information with reporters after a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, November 4.

The Cabinet decided to appoint Karki as the Special Security Adviser to the Prime Minister. Additionally, Dr. Manoj Kumar KC has been promoted to Inspector General of Police. The government emphasized that Karki’s role change is not disciplinary.

Addressing questions from journalists regarding Karki’s removal, Pokharel clarified that the government has simply reassigned him.

“He has been given the role of Special Security Adviser to the Prime Minister. This decision should not be interpreted as disciplinary action against Karki,” he stated.

“This new role aims to provide the Prime Minister with expert advice and recommendations on security matters to enhance national security.”

This position will hold the same rank as Inspector General of Police.

KC’s Appointment

The Cabinet has also promoted AIG Dr. Manoj Kumar KC to the vacant position of Inspector General of Nepal Police.

This appointment will take effect on November 4, 2026, under Rule 41 of the Police Regulations 2014.

KC previously served as Additional Inspector General and will now lead the national police force.

New Security Adviser Role Created

The Cabinet’s decision establishes the role of Special Security Adviser to the Prime Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers.

The government states that this role was created to provide the Prime Minister with expert security advice and improve national safety.

Karki has been appointed to this new position at the IGP level.

This decision signifies a leadership change within Nepal Police.

Leadership Change Raises Questions

Recent speculation about Karki’s position and reported tensions between the government and Nepal Police have emerged.

Despite rumors of potential leadership changes, the government spokesperson denied that Karki’s reassignment is punitive.

Pokharel clarified that this Cabinet decision represents a reshuffle. KC is now in charge of Nepal Police, while Karki has transitioned to a security adviser role.

The government’s statements emphasize that Karki has not faced any disciplinary action for leaving his position as Inspector General.
