A 42 year old man, who had been evading capture for seven years following a conviction in a polygamy case, has been arrested in Syangja district.
Balsingh Gurung, from Fedikhola Rural Municipality 2, was taken into custody by a team from the Fedikhola Police Post on October 24.
On October 26, he appeared before the Syangja District Court, which ordered him to serve the remainder of his sentence and pay a fine.
Court Sentenced Him to One Year in Jail
Balsingh Gurung was convicted of polygamy and sentenced to one year in prison, along with a fine of Rs. 5,000, by the Syangja District Court on April 25, 2019.
He appealed the ruling, but the Pokhara High Court upheld the original verdict on November 25, 2019.
Since then, he had been a fugitive.
Remaining Jail Time: Over 11 Months
Court records indicate that Gurung was in police custody from July 22 to August 11, 2018, during the investigation, which reduced his total sentence.
He now has 11 months and 9 days left to serve, along with the Rs. 5,000 fine.
His arrest was made to ensure he serves the remaining sentence.
Police Enforce Court Decision
Deputy Superintendent of Police Ramesh Datta Awasthi, Information Officer of the District Police Office Syangja, stated that Gurung was arrested by local police and presented to the district court.
The court mandated that he serve his remaining sentence and pay the fine.
This arrest was executed to enforce the court’s decision regarding the polygamy case.
