The defending champions kicked off their title defense with a strong performance, defeating Sudurpaschim Royals by seven wickets in the opening match of NPL Season 3 at Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur on Monday.
Lumbini won the toss and chose to bowl first, dismissing Sudurpaschim for just 87 runs in 17.2 overs. They chased down the target quickly, finishing with 61 balls to spare.
This victory gives the reigning champions a solid start to their campaign and adds pressure on last season’s runners-up.
Kishore Mahato and Sher Malla Excel for Lumbini
Lumbini began strongly with their bowling, consistently breaking partnerships.
Kishore Mahato was the standout performer, taking four wickets for 28 runs in four overs. Sher Malla contributed with three wickets.
Sudurpaschim lost four quick wickets during the powerplay. Captain Dipendra Singh Airee was the top scorer with 27 runs off 23 balls, including two boundaries.
Saif Zaib added 13 runs, while Binod Bhandari (9) and Ishan Pandey (7) contributed modestly. The remaining batters struggled to reach double figures.
Mahato struck late in the innings, dismissing captain Airee and Hemant Dhami in the same over. Sudurpaschim was bowled out for just 87, setting Lumbini a target of 88.
D’Arcy Short Dominates the Chase
Lumbini wasted no time in their chase. D’Arcy Short delivered an explosive performance, scoring 40 runs off 18 balls.
He hit four fours and three sixes, putting early pressure on the Royals’ bowlers. He formed a 71 run opening partnership with Aasif Sheikh, effectively sealing the game.
Sheikh also played well, scoring 32 runs off 25 balls. Although Sudurpaschim managed to take a few wickets later, with Anil Kharel claiming two and Airee one, they couldn’t impact the low target. Lumbini secured victory in just 9.5 overs, marking their first win of the season.
Sher Malla Shines in the Opener
In addition to Mahato’s four wickets, Sher Malla was crucial with his three wickets, which significantly weakened the Royals. He was named Player of the Match.
This performance highlighted the strength of the defending champions’ bowling attack.
Sudurpaschim, on the other hand, struggled with their batting and will need to improve in their next match.
First Use of DRS in Nepal
This match marked the first use of the Decision Review System (DRS) in Nepal.
Lumbini captain Rohit Paudel utilized the review after an lbw appeal from Mahato, but it did not go in their favor. This new addition aims to enhance the accuracy of umpire decisions.
Lumbini Sends a Strong Message to Competitors
Lumbini has sent a clear message to other franchises in the third edition of the NPL.
They showcased strong bowling and aggressive batting, leading to a swift victory.
The NPL continues on Tuesday, October 27, with Biratnagar Kings facing Chitwan Rhinos at 12:30 PM and Karnali Yaks taking on Janakpur Bolts at 5 PM.
As Lumbini looks to maintain their momentum, they aim for another championship, while Sudurpaschim seeks to recover from a difficult start.
