Prime Minister Balen Shah greeting players and organizers during the NPL opening ceremony at TU Cricket Ground

Prime Minister Balendra ‘Balen’ Shah has officially launched the third season of the Nepal Premier League (NPL).

At the opening ceremony on Monday, he started the tournament by handing the ball to the umpire.

“I welcome international players and commentators this season. Best of luck to our Nepalese cricket players, organizers, and the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN). The Nepal Premier League has quickly become one of the largest sporting events in the country,” said the Prime Minister.

The third season will take place from October 26 to November 21.

Lumbini Lions vs Sudurpaschim Royals

The competition kicked off with the defending champions, Lumbini Lions, facing last season’s runners-up, Sudurpaschim Royals.

This match is a rematch of last season’s final, where Lumbini triumphed over Sudurpaschim. Both teams are expected to compete fiercely.

Lumbini is captained by Rohit Kumar Paudel (a Nepal international), while Dipendra Singh Airee (a national all-rounder) leads Sudurpaschim.

The other teams include Kathmandu Gorkhas, Janakpur Bolts, Chitwan Rhinos, Biratnagar Kings, Pokhara Avengers, and Karnali Yaks.

All eight teams will compete in the league and playoff rounds.

New Technology and ICC Recognition

This season, the NPL is introducing new technology, including the Decision Review System.

Teams will have the option to challenge certain umpire decisions using ball tracking technology for leg before wicket calls and contact detection for edges.

The tournament has gained recognition from the International Cricket Council, with matches counting as official T20 games. This allows eligible players to have their performances added to their official statistics.

This is a significant advancement for the league.

Rs 15 Million Prize for Winners

The prize money has increased this season, with winners set to receive Rs 15 million.

The second place team will earn Rs 8 million, while third and fourth places will receive Rs 4 million and Rs 3 million, respectively.

This prize money reflects the league’s commercial growth potential. CAN estimates that the tournament will generate around Rs 1.5 billion in economic activity from sponsorships, ticket sales, broadcasts, and more.

This will benefit teams, players, and local businesses.

International Players

The NPL has attracted international players and commentators, boosting interest in the league. Well known international athletes are participating, providing local players with valuable opportunities to learn from experienced professionals.

International players include David Warner, Andre Russell, David Miller, Shakib Al Hasan, and Moeen Ali.

This is expected to enhance the league’s profile and give fans a chance to see these renowned players.

Major Opportunity for Domestic Cricket

The NPL has become a vital platform for domestic cricket, offering Nepalese players regular opportunities in a franchise T20 league.

With increased prize money, international participation, ICC recognition, and the introduction of the Decision Review System, the league is making significant strides.

As the tournament progresses until November 21, the eight teams will compete for the title, while organizers aim to maximize the event’s impact.

Overall, the launch of Season 3 presents a fantastic opportunity for Nepalese cricket to attract new audiences, develop domestic talent, and enhance its presence in international franchise cricket.
