BP Highway Upgrade Suspended Ahead of Heavy Rain Forecast

In light of weather forecasts predicting heavier than usual rainfall, the government has decided to halt all current road extension and upgrading projects along the BP Highway.

This decision affects work being done on the 20km stretch between Dhulikhel and Dapcha, along with other narrow sections. To ensure the safety of drivers and prevent vehicles from getting stuck on parts of the highway that might get muddy and slide, all heavy machinery will stop working until conditions improve.

Additionally, crews will focus on clearing temporary detour routes and drainage channels to keep access to the highway open for two-way traffic. This will allow essential vehicles and supplies to move through even during bad weather. Excavator machines and cleanup teams will also be set up in high-risk areas that may face landslides in the coming days.

These actions follow advice from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) and the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, who recommended caution when using major highways starting September 28th. The Federation of Nepal National Transport Entrepreneurs is urging everyone to avoid long trips or overnight travel due to increased risks of flash floods, landslides, and sudden debris flows.
