Police have detained three Chinese nationals linked to the seizure of 21 kg of gold in Budhanilkantha, Kathmandu, during a suspected gold smuggling operation.
A team from the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office conducted a search in the Chapali area of Budhanilkantha on Thursday, based on surveillance that indicated gold was being stored at the site.
Initial reports suggest the gold was brought from China and stored with the help of a Nepali national. Police are probing the roles of those involved and the origin of the seized gold.
Seized Gold in Various Forms
The investigation team found that the seized gold included both processed gold and raw material. Approximately 11 kg were processed, while around 10 kg were in raw form.
Police are looking into whether equipment used for processing gold into bars was present at the property.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the complete route through which the gold entered Nepal or its intended destination. Investigators will review the statements of those arrested and other evidence collected.
Investigation into Possible Smuggling Networks
The seizure has raised concerns about potential gold-smuggling networks in Kathmandu. Investigators are examining whether the gold was imported via international routes and if other individuals were involved in its storage and processing.
A Nepali citizen is also under investigation for their alleged role in storage. The involvement of the suspects and the circumstances of the seizure will be thoroughly examined.
Police will provide more information as the investigation progresses.
Ongoing Investigation
This case is garnering attention due to the significant amount of gold involved and the involvement of foreign nationals. Authorities are working to determine the gold’s source, transportation methods, and whether it was meant for illegal distribution.
The arrests and seizure are part of an ongoing investigation, and the allegations against the suspects have not yet been confirmed by a court.
Further updates are anticipated from the police as they continue to question suspects and analyze evidence related to the case.
