92 Killed in 459 Disaster Incidents in Madhesh Province

Electrocution and drowning caused most of the 92 deaths recorded in Madhesh Province, where 459 disaster incidents affected 510 families in two months.

Madhesh Province reported 459 disaster-related incidents in the first two months of the fiscal year 2083/84, leading to 92 fatalities and impacting 510 families, according to provincial police.

Among the deceased were 47 men, 19 women, and 26 children. Electrocution was the primary cause of death, resulting in 39 fatalities. Drowning accounted for 29 deaths, while five were due to wild-animal attacks, three from lightning strikes, and one from a fire. Thirteen others died in various incidents.

During the months of Shrawan and Bhadau, police recorded 112 fires, 107 electrocution cases, 37 drownings, 32 wild-animal attacks, 12 floods, and 10 lightning strikes. These disasters caused an estimated Rs 29.25 million in property damage.

Fires were responsible for the majority of losses, destroying the homes of 212 families and causing Rs 27.01 million in damage. Floods and landslides resulted in Rs 1.19 million in losses, while lightning, wild-animal attacks, and other incidents caused further damage.

Senior Superintendent of Police Prabhu Prasad Dhakal, spokesperson for the Madhesh Province Police Office in Janakpurdham, highlighted that monsoon flooding poses significant risks to rural communities. Rising water levels in rivers and ponds can lead to drownings and displace residents.

A total of 2,869 police personnel were deployed for rescue, search, evacuation, and relief efforts. Police stated that security agencies are ready to respond to emergencies across all eight districts of the province.
