The Government of Nepal has launched a nationwide effort to locate movable and immovable assets held in the names of former King Birendra, Queen Aishwarya and their family members.
It has asked every municipality and rural municipality to assist in identifying and documenting these properties.
The aim is to collect relevant records from across the country and forward them to the Office of Nepal Trust.
All local governments have been requested to provide the available property information.
The Province and Local Level Coordination Section of the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration has written to local governments to seek their cooperation.
The letters state that movable and immovable properties within Nepal should be identified and recorded.
If they are owned, entitled to or possessed by former King Birendra, Queen Aishwarya or members of their family.
Local authorities have been asked to submit documents and records relating to these assets to the Office of Nepal Trust.
Among the requested documents are land ownership certificates.
In particular, the ministry has sought land ownership certificates, land registration records, field books and other paperwork concerning properties that may belong to the former royal family.
The letters were issued by Section Officer Prakash Panthi on behalf of the ministry’s coordination section.
The documents are expected to help establish which properties exist and determine their ownership status.
The latest initiative followed a meeting at the Office of Nepal Trust in Kamaladi on Kartik 9.
Following the meeting, requests for assistance were sent to the Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation and the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration.
The government has called on local governments to cooperate under the Nepal Trust Act, Nepal Trust Regulations 2064 and Property Search Procedure 2067.
These provisions form the basis for locating assets belonging to the late King Birendra, Queen Aishwarya and their family.
Why does the property search matter?
The Nepal Trust was established to administer properties owned by the late King Birendra, Queen Aishwarya and their family, and to ensure that these assets serve the nation.
Using local government records to locate properties is an important way to identify additional assets that should be documented.
The recent nationwide request demonstrates the government’s effort to work with local authorities to expand the identification process.
