The Nepali Congress parliamentary party has raised concerns about recent police actions against journalists and is requesting the formation of a special committee to investigate the arrests and other controversial activities.

This decision was made during a parliamentary meeting on Monday.

“We seek transparency, impartiality, and an independent investigation into the arrests and related actions. We also want legal action against those found responsible,” stated Bhishma Raj Angdembe, the party leader, after the meeting.

He emphasized the need for a special committee to conduct the investigation.

Congress Raises Concerns About Police Actions

The parliamentary party expressed serious worries regarding police actions involving journalists.

“Police entering newsrooms without clear legal reasons or arrest warrants constitutes unacceptable pressure on independent media,” Angdembe asserted.

“The government must clarify the reasons for these arrests and the legal basis for their actions.”

The party noted that releasing those arrested would not resolve their concerns.

Concerns About Civil Liberties and Press Freedom

The party highlighted serious concerns over recent government actions, questioning civil liberties, press freedom, the independence of constitutional institutions, and the rule of law.

“We believe the government should operate within constitutional limits and refrain from abusing public institutions,” Angdembe stated.

“Maintaining judicial independence is crucial.”

The party is worried that these government actions could weaken the country’s constitutional framework.

Congress Will Support Democratic Government Actions

Angdembe clarified that the Nepali Congress would support any government initiatives that serve the public interest and promote good governance.

However, he added that the party would oppose any government decisions that undermine democracy, the rule of law, press freedom, and the separation of powers.

This indicates the party’s intention to take a more active role as the opposition.

Formation of a Special Committee

By advocating for a special committee, the party aims to investigate incidents involving journalists and other controversial activities within parliament.

The investigation will focus on uncovering the truth, ensuring legal procedures were followed, and identifying those responsible.

Those found guilty will face legal consequences.

This places pressure on the government to justify its actions.
