New Waste Management Bill Officially Registered in Parliament

A new waste management bill has been introduced in Parliament to improve waste management practices.

Infrastructure Development Minister Sunil Lamsal filed the bill in the House of Representatives on Thursday.

According to Minister Lamsal, the bill aims to clearly define the waste management responsibilities of federal, provincial, and local governments, covering waste generation, collection, and disposal.

The bill seeks to foster effective collaboration among government levels to maintain a clean and healthy environment through proper waste management.

Furthermore, it is expected to mitigate the health and environmental impacts of waste by promoting recycling and reuse of waste resources, aligning with the concept of a circular economy.

The Constitution of Nepal guarantees every citizen the right to a clean and healthy environment and compensation for harm caused by pollution.

If adopted, the government anticipates the bill will encourage collaboration among various levels of government, private sector organizations, and foreign aid initiatives for waste management.

Additionally, the bill is expected to enhance research and development, technology transfer, and information exchange, thereby clarifying roles and advancing the nation’s goals of environmental cleanliness and effective waste management.
