Nine complaints have been submitted against four judges recommended for appointment to the Supreme Court by Nepal’s Parliamentary Hearing Committee.
Bodha Narayan Shrestha, the committee chair, stated that they are currently reviewing these objections. He mentioned that some complaints have been filed against each of the four nominees.
The committee is examining complaints that are not confidential first, while confidential complaints will be addressed in the next meeting.
“We will prioritize non-confidential complaints, but we will review the confidential ones soon,” Shrestha said.
After reviewing these complaints, the committee will start the parliamentary hearing process.
Complaints must be submitted by November 5, but the number may increase.
Judges recommended for the Supreme Court include:
- Ratna Bahadur Bagchand, Chief Judge of the Pokhara High Court
- Chandra Bahadur Saru, Judge of the Patan High Court
- Janak Pandey, Judge of the Hetauda bench of the Patan High Court
- Gokarna Dangi, Judge of the Janakpur High Court, who has also worked at the interim bench in Birgunj.
These names have been sent to Parliament for review.
The Parliamentary Hearing Committee is tasked with investigating complaints and conducting hearings for candidates recommended for important constitutional and judicial positions.
The committee will hold hearings for the four nominees after reviewing the objections. They can only be appointed as Supreme Court justices after successfully completing the parliamentary hearing process.
With the complaint deadline approaching, the committee needs to continue its investigation into the objections.
