Nepal Police Chief Karki Holds Meeting with Chief Justice Sharma

Nepal Police Inspector General (IGP) Dan Bahadur Karki met Chief Justice Manoj Kumar Sharma in his office at the Supreme Court on Tuesday afternoon, amid recent developments concerning the judiciary and police.

According to Supreme Court sources, Karki arrived at around 4 pm and spoke with Sharma for approximately 45 minutes.

The subjects discussed during the meeting have not been made public.

The meeting followed the overnight transfer of former Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana from his residence to a police station. Police said the move was prompted by concerns for his safety.

The government said Rana had been placed in protective custody because threats against him had intensified. The Supreme Court’s full court subsequently expressed concern over his detention, particularly the decision to keep the former chief justice in police custody for about 10 hours.

After deliberating on the issue, the full court issued a statement addressing the circumstances of Rana’s detention and broader concerns about the administration of justice.

Karki’s meeting with Sharma took place after the full court’s discussion and statement. Neither Nepal Police nor the Supreme Court has said whether the meeting was directly related to the controversy.

The meeting between the country’s senior-most police official and its chief justice comes as relations between law enforcement agencies and the judiciary face increased scrutiny.
