A Russian glide bomb attack on residential areas in Zaporizhzhia has tragically killed at least 15 people, including three children, according to Ukrainian officials and emergency services.
At least 16 others were injured, with many feared trapped under the debris of damaged structures.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that five glide bombs were launched at the southeastern city on Saturday morning, causing extensive damage to residential buildings, including a partially destroyed apartment block.
Rescue Teams Search for Survivors
Emergency crews are actively searching the wreckage for potential survivors.
Acting Mayor Regina Kharchenko reported that the lower levels of an apartment building were destroyed, leading to the collapse of the upper floors.
Over 80 rescue workers are carefully examining the debris, frequently pausing to listen for signs of anyone trapped beneath.
Authorities caution that the casualty count may increase as rescue efforts progress.
Ukraine Reports Attacks in Additional Regions
Zelensky noted that Russian strikes also impacted 13 other regions of Ukraine overnight. He condemned these attacks and emphasized that Ukraine would respond.
This bombing marks a troubling escalation in lethal assaults on Ukrainian cities and civilian infrastructure amid Russia’s ongoing invasion.
Zaporizhzhia, with over 700,000 residents, is a significant urban center near the front lines, making it vulnerable to repeated Russian air strikes.
Rising Civilian Casualties
This attack follows a string of deadly incidents in Ukraine, including strikes on civilian areas and residential buildings.
Ukrainian officials have consistently urged international allies to enhance the nation’s air defenses and increase pressure on Moscow to cease hostilities.
The United Nations has reported a notable rise in civilian casualties in Ukraine during the first eight months of 2026.
Rescue operations in Zaporizhzhia are ongoing as authorities work to identify victims, assist the injured, and determine if anyone remains trapped under the rubble.
