A shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, resulted in the deaths of three children and a teacher on Thursday. Two other individuals are critically injured. The 16 year old suspect also died after being confronted by a community member inside the school.

The incident occurred during school hours in this northwestern US city, about 200 kilometers southeast of Portland. Police reported that the teen forced entry by firing at locked doors before attacking victims inside.

The deceased children were aged five, eight, and eleven. A seven-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were hospitalized in critical condition, according to Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz. The names of the victims and the shooter have not been disclosed.

Community Member Intervenes, Suspect Killed

Authorities identified the suspect as a 16-year-old boy from Bend. A community member chased him into the school and shot him. The suspect was found dead inside moments after reports of gunfire.

It remains unclear if the teen had any ties to the school or knew the victims. His motive is still unknown, and further details about his background have not been released.

Police stated that the first emergency call came shortly before 1 PM from someone in a vehicle outside Silver Rail Elementary, who was fired upon by the suspect. Additional calls reported gunfire within the school.

Officers arrived quickly to secure the scene and search the building. Police commended the rapid response, while Oregon Governor Tina Kotek expressed condolences and acknowledged the impact on the intervening community member.

Students Evacuated; Families Gather for Reunification

Emergency responders evacuated students, transporting them by bus to a nearby church designated as a family reunification center, where parents waited to reunite with their children while police continued their operations.

Silver Rail Elementary serves kindergarten through fifth grade and had 459 students enrolled last year, according to the Oregon Department of Education.

The shooting has left families, school staff, and residents in shock. Authorities worked diligently to reunite students with their families while emergency personnel attended to the injured and investigators assessed the scene.

All 32 schools in the Bend La Pine School District canceled classes, sports, and extracurricular activities on Friday, October 16, as the community began to cope with the tragedy.

Ongoing Investigation

Police are actively investigating how the shooter entered the school, the events leading to the attack, and any connections he may have had to the school community.

An initial report from law enforcement, cited by The Associated Press, indicated that the weapon used was a pump action shotgun purchased by the suspect’s mother. Authorities have not publicly named the suspect or disclosed a motive.

Investigators are working to clarify the sequence of events, including reports of shots fired at a vehicle outside the school prior to the suspect’s entry.

The FBI is assisting local law enforcement, and officials have urged the public to refrain from speculation while the investigation continues.

Community in Mourning

Governor Kotek expressed sorrow over the tragic loss of life and thanked the individual who intervened to stop the shooter. Local education officials also shared their condolences for the students, staff, and families impacted by this violence.

This incident has reignited concerns regarding gun violence in American schools and the safety of children in educational environments. Silver Rail Elementary is one of the many schools serving young children in a community recognized for its outdoor and tourism activities.

For the families in Bend, the current priority is to support those affected, care for the injured, and understand the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims or confirmed if the suspect had a previous connection to the school. The investigation is ongoing.
