
Persistent heavy rain over the past two days set off landslides in several parts of Baglung district, killing at least 10 people and leaving one person unaccounted for.
The District Police Office in Baglung said nine people died and one went missing in landslides on Sunday. A separate landslide on Saturday killed one person.
District Police Chief Phanindra Prasai said four people died and one remains missing in Tamankhola Rural Municipality, while five people were killed in Nisikhola Rural Municipality on Sunday.
In Dharnasuk, Ward 3 of Tamankhola Rural Municipality, a landslide engulfed a house, killing an 80-year-old man and a 66-year-old woman. The disaster also swept away eight homes in the area.
In Santar, Ward 4 of Tamankhola, a landslide buried a house, killing a 50-year-old man and a 65-year-old woman. The man’s wife remains missing.
Near the Jugjakhola River in Ward 3 of Nisikhola Rural Municipality, a landslide buried a house and killed four members of the same family: 36-year-old Shyam Kumari BK and her sons Manoj, Mukesh and Nishan.
Elsewhere, in Rangil, Ward 6 of Nisikhola Rural Municipality, a landslide buried a cowshed and killed a 50-year-old man.
On Saturday, a landslide buried a house in Dhasmar, Ward 5 of Tarakhola Rural Municipality, killing a 59-year-old man.
Chief District Officer Krishna Prasad Acharya said timely warnings had helped limit further deaths in the affected areas.
Security personnel are carrying out search and rescue operations. A Nepali Army helicopter has also arrived in the landslide-hit areas to assist with emergency response efforts.
The latest disasters add to the toll from ongoing rainfall across Nepal. Floods and landslides have struck multiple districts, damaging homes and infrastructure and compelling people in vulnerable locations to move to safer places.
Authorities have advised people living near unstable slopes, rivers and other hazardous areas to remain vigilant as rain continues and the risk of further landslides and flooding remains.
