The Kathmandu Valley Police Office has confirmed receiving an official request from former Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana, who is asking for security provisions for himself, his family, and his home due to significant threats to his safety.
This announcement comes in light of conflicting reports from law enforcement following a controversial police incident over the weekend, during which the former judiciary leader was briefly detained at midnight due to alleged “security threats” before being released a few hours later.
Police Address Internal Miscommunication Regarding Application Confusion surrounding the application’s status arose when early police reports provided inconsistent information regarding its formal registration.
Initially, SSP Somendra Singh Rathore of the Kathmandu Valley Police Office in Ranipokhari stated that no official letter had been received. However, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Gobinda Thapaliya later clarified that the document had indeed been submitted on a public holiday.
“The letter was received yesterday on a holiday, which may explain why some colleagues were not immediately aware. Following the request for safety, we have initiated necessary protective measures.”

Kathmandu Valley Police Office Request Comes After Notorious Midnight Detention The request for protection was formally filed by Rana’s son, Sachindra Shumsher Rana, on Sunday, coinciding with the former Chief Justice’s release from police custody.
This legal action follows a notable incident late Saturday night, when a specialized team from the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office took Rana from his Maharajgunj home, citing urgent intelligence about a possible security threat. He remained at the police facility in Teku until Sunday afternoon before being returned to his family.
In his application, the former Chief Justice emphasized that judicial decisions made during his leadership, his previous state responsibilities, and recent warnings from police personnel have posed a severe threat to his safety.
He urged state security agencies to maintain vigilant oversight of his residence and ensure adequate personal protection. Police have confirmed that security personnel are now assigned to evaluate and implement his security arrangements moving
