Nepali Congress Leadership Dispute Deepens as Deuba Camp Prepares Separate Convention

Khulamanch open grounds in central Kathmandu reserved for Nepali Congress Deuba faction general convention

The faction led by former Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba has chosen Khula Manch in Kathmandu as the venue for its parallel 15th general convention, scheduled for December 7-9.

Additionally, the Deuba faction has reserved the National Assembly Hall and Bhrikutimandap.

“We have secured all three locations,” said Amrit Karki, member secretary of the faction’s central election committee.

This decision is part of an ongoing leadership struggle within the Nepali Congress, as the Deuba faction proceeds with its parallel convention.

Three Venues Reserved

The central election committee has planned various activities across the three venues in Kathmandu.

The inauguration ceremony, private meetings, and elections for central committee members will take place at Khula Manch.

The National Assembly Hall will host the election of the party’s office bearers.

Bhrikutimandap will be designated for providing refreshments to delegates.

General Convention Set for December 7-9

The Deuba faction’s 15th general convention is set for December 7-9 (Mangsir 21-23).

It began its ward level conventions on October 1 and has been actively organizing events nationwide.

District level conventions are planned for November 1.

The faction aims to complete all internal preparations.

Parallel Convention Amid Leadership Struggle

This parallel convention is occurring during a leadership struggle within the Nepali Congress.

The Deuba faction opposes the convention process initiated by the rival group led by Gagan Thapa.

The conflict intensified after a special general convention in January, where Thapa was named party president. This leadership was recognized by the Election Commission and later upheld by the Supreme Court in April.

However, Deuba and his supporters are challenging this leadership by filing a review petition in the Supreme Court.

As a result, both factions are taking independent actions.

Deuba Group Moves Forward with Parallel Convention

Despite the internal conflict, the Deuba faction has chosen to proceed with its own 15th general convention.

Former general secretary Dr. Shashank Koirala is leading the preparation committee, while the central election committee is managing the elections.

The faction has made significant progress in preparing for the December convention by reserving three venues.

This three day convention will determine the faction’s leadership structure and influence the ongoing political dynamics within Nepal’s oldest major political party.
