
SAPTARI Heavy monsoon rains in eastern Nepal caused flooding in Saptari district, affecting around 500 homes and forcing more than 2,000 people to leave their homes when water overflowed into communities on Friday night.
The Saptakoshi river’s water level rose quickly, flooding the low-lying areas of municipalities in the Madhesh province.
Affected Municipalities and Districts
Two local areas were affected.
Hanumannagar Kankalini Municipality: In Hanumannagar Kankalini municipality, 26 wards and 1643 houses were flooded, with 483 homes in wards 5, 7, 12, and 13 completely underwater, causing residents to move to higher ground on the embankment.
Tilathi Koiladi Rural Municipality: 17 homes in Wards 4 and 5 of Tilathi Koiladi Rural Municipality are also underwater.
Mayor Birendra Majhi of Hanumannagar Kankalini Municipality said that the local government created task forces to help the people who lost their homes.
Temporary shelter and two meals each day have been given to those affected, while workers are checking the damage to the houses. The mayor said he would provide full help, including medical and sanitary supplies, once the water goes down and the damage check is complete.
Local security forces and disaster response teams are watching closely after weather reports showed more rain expected over the weekend in Koshi and Madhesh provinces.
