SpaceX Starship Reaches Orbit for First Time and Splashes Down in Pacific

On Monday, SpaceX marked a major moment in aerospace history: its enormous Starship vehicle reached orbit for the first time, then completed a controlled re-entry and made a gentle splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.

The Flight 14 test was a significant engineering achievement for the world’s most powerful launch system. It confirmed key capabilities for reaching orbit and deploying payloads functions needed for NASA’s forthcoming Artemis missions to the Moon.

Hot-Staging, Satellite Deployment, and a Targeted Return

The 400-foot rocket lifted off at 8:49 a.m. EDT from SpaceX’s Starbase site on the Texas Gulf Coast, climbing into the morning sky on the thrust of 33 methane-powered Raptor engines.

  • Super Heavy separation and boostback: Two minutes and twenty seconds after lift off, the stages separated using hot staging. The Super Heavy booster then turned back and completed a controlled vertical splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico.
  • First successful orbital insertion: The upper stage vehicle, Ship 41, continued onward and fired its Raptor engines, entering orbit at an altitude of about 170 miles (275 kilometers).
  • Starlink V3 satellite deployment: Once in orbit, Ship 41 released 26 next generation Starlink V3 satellites. This was the Starship system’s first deployment of an operational payload.

Controlled Splashdown in the Pacific

After releasing its payload, Ship 41 performed a targeted deorbit burn, directing the spacecraft back into Earth’s atmosphere.

The vehicle remained under control despite intense plasma heating during re-entry. It adopted its characteristic belly-flop position, then performed a flip-and-burn maneuver before gently splashing down in the Pacific Ocean.

The successful orbital mission yielded essential performance data on thermal-protection shielding, engine relighting in the vacuum of space, and the dynamics of atmospheric re-entry. These findings will support future crewed spaceflight.
