Karateka Tenzing Sherpa won Nepal’s first medal at the 20th Asian Games, beating Laos’ Sayasane Vatthana 9-1 in the men’s kumite +84kg repechage match at Toyohashi Gymnasium on Wednesday.
Sherpa’s win means that all eight members of Nepal’s karate team will come home with a medal. It also keeps alive a tradition where Nepal has always won medals in martial arts at the Asian Games.
His journey to the podium began with this important victory. Sherpa was the last remaining Nepali in his category after his teammates were eliminated in earlier rounds. This was a crucial moment to show that his hard work was worth it. With a lot of pressure on him, he managed to defeat Vatthana again in a thrilling match to take home the bronze medal.
With this win, Sherpa has made sure that Nepal’s team won’t return without a medal. His success adds to the pride of martial arts in Nepal, which includes taekwondo and boxing, both of which have brought many medals in past Asian Games.
This isn’t the end for Sherpa, though. As a young athlete, he has many chances ahead of him to achieve even more in future competitions. For now, he can enjoy his victory and think about making history once again.
