Banshiraj Dahal Begins Legal Consultations After APF Dismissal

Dismissed Armed Police Force AIG Banshiraj Dahal arriving for legal consultations in Kathmandu

Banshiraj Dahal, the former Additional Inspector General of the Armed Police Force APF, is seeking legal advice following his dismissal for allegedly leaking classified information.

On October 9, the Ministry of Home Affairs officially dismissed Dahal, effective immediately. A source close to him stated that he is currently evaluating his legal options.

“He has begun consultations with legal experts. The next steps will depend on his decision,” the source added.

Dismissal Following Investigation

Dahal was suspended on October 5 amid allegations of leaking confidential information and breaching professional ethics as a senior security official.

A departmental inquiry was launched, leading to a recommendation for disciplinary action, which resulted in his dismissal by the Home Ministry.

Details regarding the specific classified information allegedly leaked by Dahal have not been disclosed.

Visit to Former Chief Justice Sparks Controversy

This situation arose after Dahal visited the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office to meet former Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana while he was in police custody.

Rana was arrested on September 27, and Dahal’s unauthorized visit became a focal point of the investigation.

Authorities also questioned Dahal about his connections with Inam Sapkota, an individual reportedly involved in sharing classified information via mobile phones.

Police indicated that mobile conversations raised concerns about the possible exchange of classified information among those under investigation.

Details about the alleged leaked information remain undisclosed.

Concerns Over Senior Officer’s Dismissal

Dahal, previously the head of the APF’s Border Department, was one of the highest-ranking security officials in Nepal before his dismissal.

Reports indicate that it is uncommon for an officer at the Additional Inspector General level in Nepal’s security forces to face such disciplinary measures.

Dahal’s decision to seek legal counsel suggests he may challenge the government’s ruling, although his specific options are still unclear.

His next steps will depend on the advice from legal experts and the direction he chooses to take.
